I am reading a book entitled I Quit!: Stop Pretending Everything Is Fine and Change Your Life by Geri Scazzero. The book was assigned to me by Bishop Walter Thomas as a resource for his Pastors and Wives’ retreat, because I will be facilitating the sessions with the wives. But, I have to say this book has ministered to me!
Although the writer is a pastor’s wife, and she writes from that context, I believe anyone can be blessed by her recommendation to “stop pretending”! I found myself several times in her illustrations. Too often, I find myself doing things I don’t want to do, or going places I don’t want to go. As a result, I become frustrated and angry. The reality is, all I had to do was say, NO!
How many times have you done it? How many times have you said yes, or okay to something that was not really okay? Too often, we find ourselves trying to please others when we are causing ourselves unnecessary pain. The truth is, that behavior is an indication that we don’t love ourselves enough to get what we want or need. Instead, we work overtime to make others happy! ENOUGH! I QUIT!
I quit being afraid of what others thing; I quit dying to the wrong things; I quit denying anger, sadness, and fear; and I quit over functioning! I QUIT!
