Loyalty is faithfulness or a devotion to a person, country, group, or cause (Wikipedia). I have to wonder if anybody cares anymore about being faithful or devoted to anyone or anything. Lately, I have been amazed at how easy it is for people to walk away from long-term relationships over petty stuff, or stuff that can be fixed. It just seems so selfish to me, that ones personal emotional instability would take priority over maintaining a relationship. I realize that may sound a little harsh, but at the root of many breakups is one or two individuals too selfish to remain committed.
Who teaches loyalty anymore? How will our children learn what it means to be devoted, when there are so few examples. Married couples are less and less faithful. Friends are less and less devoted. Boyfriend/Girlfriend relationships are not monogamous. And people struggle with being faithful and devoted to leadership. Where has loyalty gone?
In my opinion, this is a major problem in every area of our society (i.e., religious community, major corporations, families, politics, etc.) Deliberate attention must be given to this issue of loyalty if relationships are expected to flourish.
